2009 SP3 - SSK12 - Introduction to University Learning (D) Distinction Murdoch University (O.U.A.)
The unit has the following broad aims:
i. to develop your skills as a university learner by integrating your practice of generic skills with a study of concepts that are relevant to several disciplines
ii. to inform your understanding of yourself as a learner within your university studies generally, as well as within your chosen discipline.
On successful completion of this unit, you should be able:
i. to apply your skills as an independent, reflective and critical learner to your university studies;
ii. to demonstrate that you have developed tertiary level communication skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening), critical thinking and study skills;
iii. to recognise and articulate your needs and strengths as a learner at university;
iv. to relate to and collaborate effectively with other members of the group on learning activities in online discussions;
v. to demonstrate the ability to cite references correctly and articulate the rationale for correct referencing in academic work;
vi. to compare and contrast different concepts of the self;
vii. to recognise and assess the impact of world views on learning and communicating at university;
viii. to apply the concept of culture to the university setting;
ix. to demonstrate understanding of the nature of concepts through your study of the concepts of self and culture; and
x. to recognise that different disciplines have different modes of enquiry and approaches to learning.

i. explain the basic technical foundations of the internet and related technologies as they apply to communications, collaboration and media
ii. demonstrate understanding of key concepts in internet communication, especially relating to identity
iii. relate conceptual understandings to practical implementation of communication online
iv. use various internet applications for communication, collaboration and media.

iv. demonstrate understanding of the similarities and differences in the way the internet is experienced, and how it is represented in private and public discourse
v. identify, understand and begin using broad categories (community economy and power) to analyse the social basis of internet technology.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
i. demonstrate understanding of the origin, nature, purpose and operation of internet-mediated communities and online networks of social interaction

iii. demonstrate an understanding of the complex relationship between technological forms of connectivity and social practices of connectivity
iv. use conceptual knowledge of internet-mediated communities and networks to be an effective participant in diverse forms of online interaction.

i. understood the issues involved in bringing traditional paper-based designs into an online publishing environment
ii. designed and created web pages using knowledge of extensible hypertext mark-up language and cascading style sheets
iii. scanned, manipulated, designed and prepared suitable bitmapped and vector-based graphics for web delivery
iv. understood the concepts and principles behind web navigation
v. developed their designs into a fully functional online web electronic environment
vi. implemented, debugged, and evaluated their developed designs on a World Wide Web server.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
i. effectively write and present information publicly using the internet
ii. demonstrate understanding of the Internet's various contexts for and channels of communication that influence writing and publishing
iii. apply understanding of specific features of the internet as a medium for effective writing and publishing
iv. present arguments concerning the importance of credibility, authority and utility in creating and assessing internet writing.

On successful completion of this unit, you will have:
i. understood the issues involved in graphic design and bringing static paper-based multimedia designs into an online interactive screen environment;
ii. analysed the intended audience, objectives and expected outcomes for a World Wide Web site design;
iii. designed and implemented a suitable navigation structure for a multi-paged website;
iv. developed their designs into a fully functional multimedia environment using suitable markup language, JavaScript, digital graphics, Flash and appropriate audio/visual material; and
v. implemented, debugged and evaluated their developed multimedia designs on a World Wide Web server.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
i. present arguments that explore the cultural and social dynamics of converging and participatory media
ii. critically analyse how communications and media are encoded for the internet

i. Be aware of the role of popular culture in society and how this changes over time;
