OUA/NET204: Internet Communities and Social Networks - Conference Paper (Curtin)

Grade: High Distinction (82%)

Essay Question:

Your paper will need to be between 2000 and 2500 words. You can write on any subject of your choice, although it should fit within the broad parameters of one of the four conference streams. You should try to present a strong argument. In some academic writing exercise you strive for a balanced approach in this case we want you to make an argument for a particular proposition, backed up with appropriate references.

You might argue for example 'Facebook has radically changed the way people relate to their online identity'. While counter arguments can obviously be made, we want you to state your case strongly making a consistent argument, and then be both prepared to defend it during the conference and to use the position as a way of engaging with other people's papers.

You will need to state why what you saying is the case, or why it should be the case. You should also comment on how your paper fits within your chosen stream. You will need to support your argument with appropriate references (using APA referencing style throughout) .

OUA/NET12 (NET102): The Internet: A Socio-Technological Introduction - Essay 2 (Curtin)

Grade: High Distinction (80%)

Essay Question:
Critically evaluate this statement: the Internet offers a space where people may resist oppression on a daily basis; it overturns traditional structures of power and control.

Inner Space – Creating a New Me

The inner space of the Internet encompasses a wide variety of applications that enables forms of empowerment to its users. By using these applications, users can further develop their own skills, knowledge and confidence with little interruption to their offline world. People can create specific user accounts for a variety of reasons, including social networking, online gaming and dating; inherently joining or creating new communities. This essay will argue that people can use these forms of empowerment by participating in controlled or non-controlled environments to overturning traditional structures of power and control and escape the oppression of their mundane lives. However, some people experience adverse consequences, such as stolen identities and colliding networks.

OUA/NET12 (NET102): The Internet: A Socio-Technological Introduction - Essay 1 (Curtin)

Grade: High Distinction (95%)

Essay Question:

Describe and explain how everyday life is now experienced through Internet-mediated activities of information and communication with reference to ONE of the six topics (Sex and/or Dating, Music, Health, Games, Faith and Politics) in the first module.

Chosen Topic – Health in Relation to High Functioning Autism (Topic approved by tutor)

“No One Can Tell I’m An Alien”

"You cannot grab hold of it. You cannot visually see it. You cannot
touch it. It does not grow on the body in the form of an extra head
or limb. However, it is real and it has a name, Autism. It is something
that exists, and shows itself through different behaviours and abilities
within the brain of the person affected by it - forever.”

-J. Peucker, personal communication, October 24, 1998.

High Functioning Autism (HFA) is a non-recognised diagnosis, similar to Autism, but less severe. People with HFA think, act and usually behave differently. Many have social issues, not just because of the way they are, but how they are perceive by others. Should we as the proposed normal ones, accept, learn and promote Autism and inadvertently force our world to suit them? This essay will explore the usefulness of the Internet as an everyday resource for understanding, communicating and learning more about Autism especially, HFA that is available now compared to ten years ago. Next, it will explore the different perceptions of the Internet as a viable health resource, along with professionals as experts compared to parents, and the concept of parents as experts. Finally, it will also explain how parents of, and people affected by the HFA disability, use the Internet in their everyday lives as a social medium and online communication tool.

Lost In The Wide World Of Bits And Bytes

“Lost in the wide world of bits and bytes” (Peucker, Personal thought, 2010). This is where I found myself within the first few weeks of this unit. I thought I knew a lot about the Internet and its technologies. I was wrong. This unit covers the basic technical foundations of the Internet and its related technologies, especially pertaining to communication and collaboration. Using excerpts from my learning portfolio, this essay will describe how my journey began with new understanding of the Internet’s technologies. In addition, how these technologies have changed to become collaborative and communicative tools within the Web 2.0 social networking concept, and the discovery of the footprints that we leave behind for others to view.

OUA/NET11 (Web101) Communication and Collaboration Online - Essay 1 (Curtin)

Grade: Credit (69%)

Essay Question:
Choose one Web 2.0 platform discussed during module two and analyse the extent to which this platform has changed, and/or has the potential to change, the way people communicate and collaborate.

“Creating Our Own Blogosphere”

Many types of blogs exist today on the World Wide Web (WWW). These include blogs that are instructional, personal, informative, product and more (Types of Blogs, n.d.). The concept of blogging began before the Web 2.0 framework became a commonly used term. Early blogs were non-participatory and their creation was limited to the knowledge of programmers. This changed by late 1999, when free blog creation software became available. Many now consider blogs are worthwhile user-participatory communication tools. This essay will analyse the extent to which blogs have evolved and have become socially collaborated and distributed networks where anyone can participate. Next, it will explore how blogs have become interlaced with other Web 2.0 technologies (Facebook, Twitter etc.), and how Really Simple Syndication (RSS) works as a distributing information tool. Finally, it will discuss two future issues: colliding networks and information privacy.
